South Korea landslide kills one as heavy rains sweep southern areas, media reports

A landslide in Geoje, South Gyeongsang province, claimed one life and injured three others on Monday, according to media reports. The incident occurred when heavy rainfall swept through the southern region of South Korea. Yonhap News Agency reported that the landslide struck a residential apartment building, burying the first floor.

Rescue workers managed to pull three residents to safety, but one person was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after. South Korea's weather agency had issued heavy rain warnings for parts of the southern region, where some areas had received up to 800 millimeters (31.5 inches) of rain, alongside thunder and lightning, since Saturday.

Geoje, a southern coastal city near Busan, experienced overflowing rivers and inundated roads, disrupting traffic and leaving residents stranded. Around 100 residents in Geoje were evacuated due to the risk of further landslides, while authorities were working to rescue 20 others who were stranded in the area, as stated by the safety ministry on Monday.
