The Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority (SLVTA) marked its 31st anniversary with a nationwide Hospital Technical Support Shramadana Programme on Monday (17). The initiative took place at 33 hospitals across the nation, in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka national programme. Castle Street Women’s Hospital in Colombo hosted the main event, under the patronage of Deputy Minister Vocational Education Nalin Hewage.

The programme, carried out with the active involvement of Generation Z and vocational training students, emphasized practical applications of technical skills in hospital maintenance. Focus areas included electrical and plumbing systems, infrastructure enhancements, and environmental cleaning. This Shramadana campaign surpassed traditional efforts by allowing young people to utilize their hands-on expertise in electronics, electrical work, plumbing, building maintenance, mechanical work, and other technical disciplines to bolster the public healthcare system.

Aligned with the Clean Sri Lanka concept, the initiative showcased the younger generation's commitment to environmental cleanliness, positive attitudes, property protection, and sustainable national development. Clean Sri Lanka Colombo District Coordinator and Member of Parliament Dr Najith Indika, along with Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat officials Kapila Senarath, Director (Social) Chinthaka Rajakaruna, and Director (Volunteer Services) H.P.S. Shantha, were among the attendees.

The event underscored the pivotal role of young people as "opportunity creators" in nation-building, moving beyond the notion of mere "opportunity seekers". SLVTA Chairman Vijitha Weerathunga and Vice Chairman T. Dharmaraja, alongside Director General Major General Priyantha Weerasinghe (Retd.) and Director of Vocational Training Milinda, were also in attendance.
