Selangor waits for Putrajaya to register Myanmar refugees before deciding next steps

Shah Alam, Aug 17 — Selangor's state government is holding its breath, waiting for the Home Ministry's approval after registering Myanmar refugees and stateless individuals under the Refugee Registration Document (DPP). Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari revealed that the state government is presently compiling district-level data to submit to the Home Ministry, paving the way for follow-up action in collaboration with relevant agencies and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

"They need to be registered first. This falls under the Home Ministry's jurisdiction, and we are eagerly awaiting the registration completion before we can proceed with the necessary arrangements," Amirudin emphasized. The data collection is underway through District Security Committees, with Hulu Langat having already compiled its data, while the remaining districts will follow suit before the submission to the Home Minister.

On the issue of Myanmar refugees and other undocumented individuals operating businesses in Selangor, Amirudin clarified that the state government lacks the authority to grant licenses or permits, as it falls under the purview of the Federal Government, specifically the Home Ministry. Nonetheless, he stressed that humanitarian considerations must also be taken into account, including potential repatriation discussions.

"Our aspiration is to repatriate them, but repatriation necessitates the consent of their respective governments. In parallel, humanitarian factors come into play, as mass repatriation could result in street living, giving rise to other societal challenges. Thus, striking a balance in handling this matter is crucial," Amirudin advised.

Meanwhile, the state government remains in suspense over the Federal Government's decision regarding the release of the report on the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, which occurred in April 2025. Amirudin expressed readiness to release the report upon obtaining permission from the Federal Government, which involves several agencies and government-linked companies.

"We are prepared to release the report by the end of this year, or by the final quarter if no decision is made. Otherwise, I will discuss with our legal adviser to determine whether we can make the report public, provided it remains within our jurisdiction," he concluded.
