Professor Kasunmu, SAN: The Exit of a Quintessential Academic and Advocate

Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, who passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the age of 92, was a towering figure in the Nigerian legal landscape. Known for his academic prowess, public service, and astute advocacy, he left an indelible mark on the profession.

Born on May 23, 1934, Prof Kasunmu's career spanned over 60 years. He began his journey as a lecturer at the University of Ife, later becoming the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos. His tenure as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice for Lagos State (1975–1978) showcased his unwavering commitment to the rule of law.

Upon his appointment as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1979, Kasunmu continued to distinguish himself in private practice, both domestically and internationally. His extensive legal scholarship and astute representation in litigation and arbitration set a high standard for Nigerian jurisprudence.

A consummate learned gentleman, Kasunmu was admired for his intellectual and professional distinction.
