Pakistan Petroleum Limited announces gas and condensate discovery in Sindh's Sujawal

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), a state-owned oil and gas company, made a groundbreaking discovery in Sindh’s Sujawal district on Monday. The pioneering discovery of gas and condensate from an exploratory well, Dolphin X-1, in the Sirani Block marked the first-ever hydrocarbon find from the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation in the Lower Indus Basin, opening up a new hydrocarbon play in previously untapped, challenging frontiers.

This discovery enhances the prospects for shallow offshore exploration in Pakistan and converts a formerly unexplored frontier area into a proven petroleum play. The well was spudded on April 17, 2026, and drilled down to a depth of 3,850m to test the hydrocarbon potential of the Chiltan Formation. The discovery was made possible by overcoming the challenging geographical location and marshy terrain of the Sirani Block.

The Sirani Block is operated by PPL with a 75% Working Interest (WI), along with a 25pc WI held by joint venture partner Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL). The drilling and testing process utilized indigenous expertise, and the discovery was confirmed based on preliminary results of geological, geophysical, and engineering test data.

The company expressed appreciation for the "far-reaching vision" of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and acknowledged the "invaluable" support of the Pakistan Navy throughout the project.
