Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has publicly endorsed the Regal Film Festival and Awards (REFFA), an initiative established by Ghanaian film producer, actress, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Selassie Ibrahim. The endorsement came following a meeting between Ibrahim and a delegation of Ghanaian and Nigerian film professionals at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
Ibrahim explained that REFFA is aimed at connecting content creators to audiences, revitalizing Ghana's film industry, and fostering cross-border collaborations, particularly with Nigeria's prolific Nollywood sector. She highlighted that REFFA includes training in content packaging, distribution, and scriptwriting, emphasizing the importance of quality storytelling in competing on the global stage.
The Asantehene expressed his support for the initiative, noting that collaborative efforts among African leaders in the film industry are crucial for attracting investment and demonstrating the profitability of African cinema. REFFA's main event is scheduled for December 8 to 12, 2026, with over 300 film entries from 36 African countries.
A preliminary awareness float was held on August 15, 2026, attended by the Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom, Asantehemaa Nana Yaa Akyaa II.
