Osun poll shows opposition needs single candidate to defeat Tinubu – SDP

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has emphasized the importance of opposition parties uniting behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, based on the recent Osun State governorship election. National Chairman Sadiq Gombe stated that the victory of incumbent governor Ademola Adeleke, despite pressure and intimidation, demonstrated that a united opposition could challenge the ruling party.

Gombe clarified that the SDP's poor performance in this election was due to legal battles over the party's candidate and delayed recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission, rather than a reflection of its true strength or acceptability. He pledged that a coalition of opposition parties could provide the necessary leadership to defeat the APC in 2027, citing Osun as evidence that a common candidate could succeed against the odds.
