Mexico will not enact a social media ban like Australia, says Sheinbaum: Monday’s mañanera recapped

President Claudia Sheinbaum did not support implementing a ban on social media usage for minors during her Monday morning press conference. The idea of such a ban was described as "very problematic" by Sheinbaum, who questioned how it could be effectively enforced and pointed out that such a restriction might actually encourage teenagers to seek out the platforms even more.

Sheinbaum also addressed the topic of cell phone usage in schools, noting that 16 of Mexico's 32 states already have restrictions in place and that the goal is to bring about nationwide regulation. Over 1 million teachers across 200,000+ schools will participate in a nationwide consultation from Aug. 24-25 to discuss the appropriate use of digital devices in classrooms.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the government is focused on addressing excessive screen time, addictive scrolling, and children's exposure to inappropriate content or potential online predators. Additionally, Sheinbaum confirmed that two Mexicans lost their lives in the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia last Monday. The Foreign Affairs Ministry has been in communication with the families of the two deceased individuals, who were from the state of Durango and were staying at the Hotel Dibeni in Pereira when the quake hit the city.
