MCK: 8 journalists, 5 drivers attacked during Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has expressed alarm over a surge in attacks against journalists, specifically citing eight journalists and five drivers who were assaulted during a rally in Homa Bay. These incidents occurred on Sunday, August 17, 2026, as part of the Linda Mwananchi caravan tour. The council has urged the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Inspector General of the National Police Service to take swift action against those responsible for these attacks, which have resulted in injuries, equipment destruction, and online harassment.

The MCK has documented several cases, including a burnt vehicle belonging to Mediamax Network Limited and assault on journalists and their equipment from various media houses, such as the Standard Group, Associated Foreign Press, KBC, and Citizen TV. The council emphasizes the lack of investigations and prosecutions as emboldening the perpetrators, posing a significant threat to democracy and media freedom in the country.

They have submitted these cases to relevant authorities, urging them to work with affected journalists to ensure justice. The MCK also noted similar attacks in Mombasa, Mt Elgon, and the Kaloleni by-election in July 2026, warning that continued impunity could create a dangerous atmosphere for journalists leading up to the 2027 General Election.
