Malleswaram market: BDA finalising concessionaire agreement, ready to hand over shops to GBA

The redevelopment of Malleswaram flower market, which has been delayed for years, is nearing completion. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is now finalising a concessionaire agreement for the operation and maintenance of the market, and is ready to transfer the shops meant for flower vendors from the old market to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).

This development has brought hope to vendors who had been displaced from the old flower market on Sampige Road in 2014, when it was demolished and redeveloped. With 192 vendors who had permits now displaced, many have faced losses, with some even shutting down their shops. The BDA has constructed a G+5 floor building, with two basements for parking and five floors for commercial use.

The ground floor will house the flower market, while the upper and lower basement can accommodate 235 cars each, to be operated by the concessionaire. The upper floors will be made available to commercial tenants. The project faced several challenges, including delays in site clearance, the pandemic, changes in the National Building Code and the discovery of hard rock during foundation work.

A senior BDA official stated that the structure of the building was ready, and the concessionaire will come on board soon, operating under the Design/Decorate, Build, Finance, Operate, Lease and Transfer (DBFOT) model.
