Mahama announces referendum on proposed constitutional amendments in 2027

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for a national referendum on proposed constitutional amendments, to be held alongside the 2027 District Assembly Elections. The referendum will allow voters to decide on changes to the Constitution while electing Assembly Members. If the referendum is successful, the proposed amendments will be implemented, with non-entrenched clauses requiring only Parliamentary approval.

Entrenched clauses will need a referendum, with a minimum of 40% voter turnout and 75% of voters approving the changes. The Constitutional Review Implementation Committee will categorize the proposed amendments and oversee the referendum process. Additionally, Mahama has directed the Minister of Roads and Highways to build a road in the Kologo Traditional Area and tasked the Minister of Education with establishing a Senior High School in the region.
