Luigi Mangione New York murder trial postponed after guilty plea in federal case

In a New York courtroom on Monday, the state murder charges against Luigi Mangione were adjourned after his attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the indictment. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has until October 9 to respond to the motion, effectively halting Mangione's state murder trial that had been scheduled to commence on September 8.

Judge Gregory Carro set December 10 as the next possible court date for the case. Mangione is set to be sentenced in federal court on December 18, facing a potential life sentence. On Friday, Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges and admitted to shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024.

He stated, "I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died," adding, "I knew what I was doing was illegal." Immediately after his guilty plea, Mangione's legal team filed a motion to dismiss the state charges under New York's double jeopardy law, which prohibits prosecution for the same crime twice through successive prosecutions.

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo informed reporters that under New York law, a person cannot be prosecuted and punished twice for the exact same crime. Mangione initially pleaded not guilty in the state case and was set to go on trial for second-degree murder, criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second-degree, and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon in various degrees.
