Ledama vows to limit campaign period to 3 months if he becomes president

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, in a post on X on August 17, 2026, has urged for Kenya's official campaign period to be capped at three months if he becomes president. Olekina warned that extended political activity is leading to violence, insults, and division. If elected, he vowed to collaborate with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to enforce campaign rules and impose penalties for violations.

Olekina argued that prolonged campaigns have become a breeding ground for goonism and political violence, and could ultimately undermine the nation's progress. The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) also expressed concern over attacks on journalists and disruptions of political events, with 18 journalists and two drivers attacked in two months.

These incidents involved security agents, goons, and political party supporters, and the MCK called for investigations and prosecution of those responsible. Olekina's proposal follows intensifying political mobilization ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders and parties already holding rallies and positioning candidates.

Other political leaders, such as Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, have also condemned political violence and called for transparency in campaign financing and an independent electoral process.
