Lakeside community march for justice in Riverview Church property conflict

On Saturday, August 15, 2025, members of the Riverview Church of Christ in Lakeside, South Africa, joined forces with the broader Lakeside community for a peaceful march from the Muizenberg police station to the church property at the heart of a longstanding dispute. The marchers demanded greater accountability from law enforcement, municipal authorities, and other governing bodies over a series of unresolved concerns related to the property's use and management.

The congregation has been engaged in legal battles for over a decade to assert their right to access and practice their religion at the site, which has been subject to intense scrutiny and court proceedings. In a recent turn of events, nearly 100 shipping containers were placed on the property in 2024, leading to renewed tensions and renewed calls for intervention.

The marchers handed over a community memorandum outlining their grievances, which included allegations of overcrowding, fire and electrical safety hazards, traffic and parking issues, noise disturbances, and potential violations of municipal planning, building, and zoning regulations. They emphasized the need for a thorough inspection of the property by multiple City departments, including Law Enforcement, Building Development Management, Fire and Rescue Services, Electricity, Environmental Health, and Planning.

The community also requested that the Police investigate outstanding criminal complaints and allegations of threats, intimidation, and assault, as well as the execution of any outstanding lawful instructions from the Court. Central to the marchers' message was the protection of the congregation's constitutional rights to freedom of religion and peaceful assembly, which they believed had been compromised by a lack of enforcement of court orders and legal standards.

While they were not seeking to influence the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings, the community sought assurance that authorities would uphold their responsibilities and provide transparent updates on the status of their concerns.
