Maritime technology firm Kaiko Systems' analysis of Port State Control data reveals that vessels utilizing its platform record fewer deficiencies during inspections compared to the industry average. The study, which analyzed 880 contracted vessels using Kaiko's platform, found that those vessels averaged 1.30 deficiencies per inspection, while the market rate stood at 2.56 deficiencies per inspection.
This data comes as shipowners prepare for a new concentrated inspection campaign focused on cargo securing, set to run from 1 September to 30 November 2026.
Kaiko Systems' customers experienced notably better inspection results – 56% of inspections involving their vessels closed with zero deficiencies, compared to 43% across the market. Notably, none of the 16 previously detained vessels included in the study were re-detained after joining Kaiko's platform. This indicates that the system helps reduce deficiencies ahead of inspections.
The findings underscore the value of Kaiko Systems' platform for shipowners. Fabian Fussek, co-founder and CEO of Kaiko Systems, explained that cargo securing is a critical area where small oversights can lead to significant problems during inspections. He emphasized that the goal is not to provide another checklist but to help seafarers understand what inspectors are most likely to focus on, where deficiencies typically arise, and what needs attention prior to arrival in port.
Kaiko Systems will host a free webinar on Thursday, 20 August, to walk participants through the new concentrated inspection campaign's questions, identify areas of inspection exposure, and demonstrate how port-specific vessel preparation and fleet-level readiness can be managed digitally. Interested parties can register for the webinar at https://register.gotwebinar.com/register/6326981789672409429.
Kaiko's platform empowers crews to collect structured evidence onboard while providing shore teams with a fleet-level view of inspection readiness and risk exposure. Its tools are designed to move operators away from generic preparation methods toward risk-based, individual vessel and port call-specific readiness.
