Israel’s largest crypto broker Bits of Gold hit by data breach affecting 200,000 customers

Funds and digital assets were not touched, but names, bank account details, and national ID numbers may have been exposed in what the company says was a wider global attack.

Israel’s largest crypto broker Bits of Gold hit by data breach affecting 200,000 customers

Bits of Gold, Israel's largest cryptocurrency broker, has fallen victim to a data breach that has affected approximately 200,000 customers, the company announced on Sunday. The Tel Aviv-based firm disclosed that hackers gained unauthorized access to a third-party data analytics network, allowing them to obtain sensitive customer information. The stolen data includes names, national ID numbers, emails, phone numbers, IP addresses, bank account details, and public wallet addresses.

Upon discovering the incident, Bits of Gold immediately took action to secure the affected system, severing its connection to the compromised data sources, according to the company's statement. The hacker was not able to obtain funds, private keys, passwords, CVV codes, or scanned ID documents from the brokerage.

The company reported that the breach was part of a larger global incident affecting multiple organizations simultaneously. This is the third data breach reported within the crypto industry within the past week. Earlier this week, nearly 40,000 SafePal users had their data stolen due to a third-party vendor's security breach, and on August 13, personal information belonging to around 14,000 Trezor wallet customers was exposed after its fulfillment partner, ShipMonk, was compromised.

Bits of Gold's security team has initiated a comprehensive investigation of the incident, collaborating with a specialized firm in cyber incident investigation and response. The brokerage emphasized that customers' digital assets and funds remained unaffected by the breach. Founded in 2013, Bits of Gold was the first cryptocurrency company in Israel to secure a permanent Financial Services Provider license.

The firm currently has over 250,000 customers and is certified under SOC 2 Type 2. CEO Youval Rouach leads the company.
