Iran bars two French embassy employees from returning to Tehran following diplomatic dispute

Iran has prohibited two French embassy employees from re-entering the country following a diplomatic dispute last month, according to a statement from Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. Baghaei alleged that the two diplomats had violated the Vienna Convention, which outlines the rules and privileges of diplomatic missions, by participating in activities that support Iranian civil society.

Baghaei's assertion that these individuals' actions constituted a breach of the Vienna Convention implies that Iran itself is guilty of breaching the convention by accusing the French diplomats of such activities.

Tehran has historically been highly sensitive to perceived Western interference in its internal affairs, particularly in the wake of the US and Israel's airstrikes on Iran in late February. The dispute between Iran and France stems from the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, who stated in a recent interview that the mission of the two embassy employees was to develop programs supporting Iranian civil society, students, and artists.

France has been a leading contributor to Iranian civil society, and the country has suffered consequences for its support. Following the initial accusation, France summoned Iran's charge d'affaires on July 21, alleging that Iranian security forces had detained and physically intimidated its embassy staff in Tehran.
