Two thieves in China attempted to rob an Esport hotel of their high-end NVIDIA RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 graphics cards. Their plan was to swap out the expensive Blackwell GPUs for older RTX 3060 cards, which would still function properly and go unnoticed by hotel staff. However, their scheme was foiled by a power outage that they inadvertently caused.
The suspects called the front desk after their room lost power, prompting electricians to investigate and discover pry marks on the desktop PCs. Hotel staff then inspected another room used by the thieves and found that the RTX 5080 GPUs had been replaced with RTX 3060 GPUs. The suspects were arrested and charged, having previously stolen close to RM50,000 worth of GPUs in other incidents.
