Excitement, anticipation, nerves as RI high school football starts up

Cranston high school football kicked off with enthusiasm and trepidation as the season commenced. The overcast skies and mildly cool temperatures at Cranston West provided a refreshing change from the usual summer heat. The Falcons underwent a rigorous three-hour practice, starting on the grass field and transitioning to the turf for the latter part of the session. Quarterback Jonathan Leroux, a rising star, demonstrated his improved command of the offense, throwing precise spiral passes to his teammates.

Last season, Cranston West finished with a 1-3 record, but their subsequent six-game winning streak, including an upset victory against La Salle, propelled them into the top half of the Division I playoffs. This year's team includes experienced players such as Ethan Parent and Charlie Cornell, who will be supported by Leroux, who has honed his skills alongside the older teammates.

Running back Mehkhai Taylor and the receiver group, which is expected to retain Daniel Mojica, Jake Anzivino, and Ariel Ochoa, are all expected to contribute significantly to the team's performance.

Meanwhile, Toll Gate High School in Warwick started its season with a bang, despite the construction on campus. Under the guidance of fourth-year coach Jim Miceli, the Titans, who went winless last season, boast a strong line of scrimmage and a depth that should help them withstand a challenging nine-game schedule that begins on September 10.

The defense also received ample practice time, and the coaches are confident that the team will bounce back in the upcoming season. The seniors, who have only won one game in the past three seasons, are determined to prove their worth and look forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving match against Pilgrim.
