Ex-Pak Datacom CEO Warns Shifting NBP to UAE Network Risks Sensitive Data

Former Pak Datacom CEO Brigadier (retired) Syed Zulfiqar Ali has cautioned that moving the National Bank of Pakistan's (NBP) satellite connectivity to an offshore network operated by Yahsat in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could pose security risks to sensitive data. This shift occurred when Pak Datacom replaced the NBP's indigenous satellite-based backup connectivity, previously provided via PakSat from VSAT hubs in Karachi and Islamabad, with a Yahsat-based network.

The complainant argues that this change, while retaining a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection over Yahsat, does not eliminate the potential security risks associated with using an overseas satellite and hub. Pak Datacom, which previously offered dedicated and autonomous satellite connectivity to over 400 NBP branches, now operates a UAE-based solution, raising concerns about the protection of government-related data, including defence-related accounts.

The letter recommends reverting to a Pakistan-based satellite network, specifically the PakSat system, with hubs in Karachi and Islamabad. Similar proposals were made for Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and the Accountant General Pakistan Revenues (AGPR), emphasizing the need for domestic satellite infrastructure as a safer alternative in the current regional context.

The document emphasizes Pak Datacom's ownership structure, controlled by Telecom Foundation with 55% shares and the remaining 45% being publicly held, and notes that Telecom Foundation operates under the Ministry of IT and Telecommunications' direct control, seeking examination of the matter by relevant authorities.
