The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully recovered GH¢4.3 million from illegal connections in the Western Region between January and June of this year. General Manager, Ing Emmanuel J. Ofori, revealed that the illegal activities were discovered during revenue protection and monitoring exercises targeting the eradication of such connections. During the specified period, the team conducted routine checks in Sekondi, Takoradi, Agona, Tarkwa, and Sefwi Wiawso districts.

Collaborating with the police, ECG established a police unit to combat illegal connections and related activities. Ofori urged the public to report any suspected illegal connections to ECG to help curb the issue. Revenue Protection Manager, Ing Eric Agyeman, detailed that the team identified various types of illegal connections, such as meter tampering, meter bypasses, and unauthorized service connections.

In total, 2,367 customers were screened across the districts, leading to the recovery of 3.64 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity. Agyeman emphasized that illegal connections deprive the company of its expected revenue and contribute to commercial losses.
