Diana Taurasi inducted into the Mercury Ring of Honor as franchise celebrates 20 years of excellence

Phoenix Mercury celebrated 20 years of excellence this past Sunday, inducting Diana Taurasi into their Ring of Honor. The WNBA star, widely considered the greatest player in her league's history, was honored during halftime of a match against Portland Fire. Her jersey, number 3, was retired in her honor, marking her indelible impact on the team.

Taurasi, 44, spent 20 years with the Mercury, winning almost every possible title, including the most championships and awards for a player. She holds the WNBA's career scoring record, is an 11-time All-Star, six-time Olympic gold medalist, five-time scoring champion, three-time WNBA champion, two-time WNBA Finals MVP, and 2009 regular-season MVP. She was also the 2004 Rookie of the Year.

Taurasi's dedication to the team and her community was evident in her emotional speech before the ceremony. "This place has made me who I am," she said, expressing deep gratitude for the friendships formed over the years, including with the team's loyal fan base known as the "X-Factor." "Today feels different. When your number goes up there, you can't use it anymore, it's done. So if there was any little competitiveness still in me, I think today it goes up in the rafters with the number and it feels really good."

The celebration was filled with tributes from fellow players and celebrities, including Suns star Devin Booker, former teammate Brittney Griner, and football Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Larry Fitzgerald. WNBA legends Sheryl Swoopes and swimmer Michael Phelps also attended. Taurasi’s legacy was further recognized with a mural featuring her on the arena's side and a "Goat Plush Toss" game where toy goats were thrown into the stands.
