Deion Sanders subpoenaed for son Shilo's bankruptcy trial days before Colorado opener

Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders was subpoenaed to testify at his son Shilo’s bankruptcy trial, according to USA TODAY Sports reporter Brent Schrotenboer. The trial is set to begin in Denver on Aug. 31, just before the Buffs play their first game of the 2026 season against Georgia Tech on Sept. 3. Judge Michael E. Romero expressed concern about the scheduling conflict, stating that the trial could last a week or longer and would overlap with the game.

Sanders recently expressed frustration about the case, saying "They've got to stop this man," as the trial has dragged on for 11 years. Shilo Sanders is accused of assaulting a former high school security guard, John Darjean, in 2015, and owes $11.89 million in a default judgment from a 2022 Texas court. The outcome of the trial will depend on whether Sanders can prove self-defense or if the assault is deemed "willful and malicious."
