California startup's $3 billion 'manta ray' jet promises 50% lower fuel use

California-based startup JetZero is gearing up for a potential revolution in the airline industry with its innovative blended-wing-body aircraft, the Z4. The company claims that the Z4 could use 30% to 50% less fuel than current aircraft, making it an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for the future of air travel.

During the Farnborough International Airshow, JetZero and Japan Airlines joined forces to develop the aircraft, which is expected to have a full-scale prototype airborne by 2027 and commercial operations starting in the early 2030s. The Z4's design features a wide, flattened center section that gradually merges into the wings, reducing aerodynamic drag and increasing lift.

While the target fuel reduction is a company goal, it is not based on certified passenger aircraft performance. The aircraft would carry up to 250 passengers and fly up to 5,000 nautical miles, making it suitable for many medium- and long-distance routes. Japan Airlines will contribute its expertise in flight operations, cabin service, maintenance, and ground handling to the partnership, supporting the airline's commitment to sustainable innovation and net-zero emissions by 2050.
