Border wall work pauses inside Big Bend

The Trump administration has temporarily halted construction of a contentious border wall project in Big Bend National Park in Texas while the head of the agency responsible for the wall visits the area to conduct an on-the-ground evaluation. The Big Bend National Park, located in southern Texas, has faced significant bipartisan opposition due to concerns that the wall is harming a pristine environmental area and that the region's rugged, remote terrain already serves as a natural deterrent to migrants and smugglers.

Rodney Scott, the head of Customs and Border Protection, announced on X that he would visit Texas to personally evaluate the situation. He stated, "CBP is pausing all construction activity in Big Bend National Park while I visit and conduct a personal, on-the-ground evaluation." Congress allocated $46 billion to the Trump administration last summer to construct a wall spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

The administration has been progressing swiftly, waiving multiple regulations to expedite the wall's construction. Scott anticipates that the first layer of the wall will be completed by the end of the next year. However, they have encountered strong opposition in Texas, particularly regarding construction in and around Big Bend National Park and a state park located to the west.
