Algoma Steel suffers unplanned power outage, suspends electric arc furnace production

Algoma Steel Group Inc. has temporarily halted its electric arc furnace production at its facility in Sault Ste. Marie following an unexpected disruption at the Lake Superior Power power station. The issue arose when one of the turbine units at the power station detected an abnormal condition and was automatically shut down, while the other units remained unaffected.

Algoma Steel is currently evaluating the status of the impacted equipment and exploring different options. Additionally, the company is moving forward with routine maintenance to minimize future planned disruptions. Downstream finishing and shipping operations continue unabated, and based on existing inventory and order positions, Algoma does not anticipate a substantial impact on fulfilling committed customer delivery dates.

However, the outage could potentially affect future shipment volumes, as Algoma assesses the situation. The Canadian Press reported the incident on August 17, 2026.
