Alberta’s Smith calls byelection in Calgary, vote to take place Sept. 14

Calgary - Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has announced a byelection for a southern Calgary constituency, with voting scheduled for September 14. The constituency of Calgary-Shaw has been without a representative since May, following the resignation of former United Conservative Party cabinet minister Rebecca Schulz.

Both Smith's United Conservative Party and the opposition New Democratic Party have chosen their respective candidates for the riding in June. Smith's candidate, Mike Derry, is described as community-minded and a strong voice for the riding in the legislature. NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi urges Calgarians to support his party's candidate, Kyle Campbell, to send a message against a government perceived as catering to separatists.
