Afrifa, Bonzo Lead NPP Executive Team In Western Region

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana's Western Region has undergone a significant shift in its regional executive following elections that saw most incumbents removed. The only incumbent to maintain their position was the Regional Organizer, Yaw Amoabeng. Ignatius Kwasi Afrifa, a former parliamentary candidate, emerged victorious as the new Regional Chairman, securing 265 votes against his main rival Abdul Ganiu, who received only 102 votes.

The contest for Regional Secretary was a closely watched battle, won by KwasiBonzo, also known as Bonzo K, with 211 votes. Bonzo's win is seen as a victory for those who had previously faced disqualification and subsequent reinstatement by the party's Steering Committee. The Regional Organizer position was the only one retained by an incumbent, attributed to Yaw Amoabeng's strong political networks and connections in the region.

The election results indicate a strong desire among delegates for change, particularly ahead of the 2028 general election, and signal a potential transformation in the party's political direction. Other key positions, such as Deputy Secretary and Youth Organizer, saw new leadership emerge, with Lawrence KojoAppiahTakyi and Osagyefo Atiah Kwaw winning their respective contests.

The women's wing also saw a change in leadership, with Augustine Nketsiah defeating Josephine YaaOdoom. The scale of these changes and the defeat of most incumbents highlights the delegates' dissatisfaction with the previous administration and suggests a demand for a new political strategy. The Western Region, being strategically important both electorally and in terms of national contributions, will now be led by a largely new executive team as the party embarks on rebuilding efforts following its 2024 general election defeat and prepares for the 2028 contest.
