Aavin’s automatic milk vending machine launched in Udhagamandalam

The revived initiative is aimed at reducing plastic waste from milk sachets in the Nilgiris

Aavin’s automatic milk vending machine launched in Udhagamandalam

Aavin has reintroduced automatic milk vending machines in Udhagamandalam, a move aimed at minimizing plastic waste from milk sachets. The new facility, situated near the farmer's market at Charring Cross, was inaugurated by District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru on Monday, August 17, 2026. Ms. Tanneeru emphasized the importance of reducing single-use plastic waste, noting that milk sachets are a significant contributor to pollution in the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal regions.

Earlier this year, Aavin informed the Madras High Court that it sells over 60 lakh milk sachets daily across the State, prompting the court to direct the company to find a solution.

The Collector described the automatic milk vending station as a reuse of the button paal system that once existed in Tamil Nadu. This new machine, costing approximately ₹7 lakh to install, is designed to reduce plastic usage. It allows customers to bring their own containers for milk purchases and accepts payments via cash, prepaid cards, or digital gateways.

The machine can process currency notes and dispense milk based on the denomination inserted, with a minimum purchase value of ₹10 per transaction. Ms. Tanneeru stated that the response from the public will determine the installation of additional machines in other areas of the district.

In addition to the automatic vending machines, Ms. Tanneeru inaugurated the sale of milk, milk powder, ghee, milk sweets, ice cream, and biscuits through Aavin's mobile sales vehicle on the same day.
