Ukrainian Navy Strikes Russian Bastion Missile System in Crimea

On August 16, the Ukrainian Navy targeted the launch positions and deployment site of a Russian Bastion coastal missile system in occupied Crimea, as reported by the Navy on Facebook. The strike resulted in substantial damages to Russian weapons and personnel, though the precise casualty figures remain under review. The Bastion system, a costly and limited asset, is employed by Russian forces to deploy supersonic Onyx and hypersonic Zircon missiles at Ukraine's southern and other territories.

This operation is part of a broader strategy to diminish Russia's combat effectiveness in the Black Sea region.

The August 16th attack is the latest in a series of military actions. On August 12, a significant drone attack caused extensive fires at multiple locations across the occupied Crimean peninsula. Satellite images analyzed by the Crimean Wind monitoring group revealed active fires near Balaklava, south of Sevastopol, and at a Russian military border facility in Risove, northern Crimea.

Russian-appointed Governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, attributed the fires to intercepted drone debris. Commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert Brovdi, emphasized that the Ukrainian military's goal is to diminish Crimea's capacity as a staging area for Russian operations. Recent strikes have targeted critical infrastructure including rail bridges, fuel depots, power systems, and air defense installations.

However, Brovdi noted that the Ukrainian forces are currently operating at just 14% of their required capacity due to delays in receiving Western funding. He suggested that if the funding were received as planned, Ukraine could launch up to seven additional strikes.
