Ty Simpson joins Baker Mayfield as only QBs to do this in preseason

Ty Simpson made history on his NFL debut, matching a feat previously accomplished by Baker Mayfield in 2018. Simpson, the Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback, completed 21 of 25 passes without turnovers or sacks in the preseason game against the Chiefs, throwing for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Head coach Sean McVay praised Simpson's command of the offense, noting he took what the defense provided.

However, Simpson acknowledged there is still much to learn about the team's system. The comparison to Mayfield's 2018 performance is notable, as both players had memorable debuts that propelled their careers forward. Mayfield went on to play four seasons with the Browns, then the Panthers, before joining Tampa Bay, where he has started for the past three seasons.

Simpson's path is different, as he was drafted as the Rams' intended starter behind Matthew Stafford, meaning his future hinges on patience rather than finding the right fit. Despite the impressive debut, Simpson still needs to compete with Stetson Bennett for the No. 2 spot behind Stafford. The Rams will continue to assess his development throughout the preseason, with the third preseason game serving as another opportunity to evaluate his progress in the quarterback competition ahead of potential roster cuts.
