Trump’s midterm malaise: endless war and high prices could spell doom for Republicans in November

Two years after Donald Trump held a press conference in New Jersey showcasing food items to tackle alleged inflation under Democrats, rising food prices continue to be a concern for Republicans as they prepare for the November midterm elections. Standing at his Bedminster golf club with tables laden with groceries, Trump accused the Biden administration of causing soaring grocery costs.

The event aimed to discredit Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and emphasize Trump's claim to control inflation and reduce living costs. However, two years later, higher gasoline and grocery prices are straining household budgets, making the cost of living the top issue for voters, who now favor Democrats in economic stewardship compared to Republicans for the first time in nearly a decade, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Sheila Carney, a 68-year-old Trump voter, expressed her frustration as she loaded $70 worth of groceries into her car near Trump's Bedminster club, highlighting that affordability concerns remain a daily burden for many Americans. Carney, a hospital administration assistant, delayed retirement to help pay off her son's student loans and emphasized that Trump has not delivered on his promise to lower prices.

A Reuters analysis of 26 grocery categories tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that prices have risen 3.4% in the first 19 months of Trump's second term, slightly less than the 4% increase during the same period of former President Joe Biden's first term. Nonetheless, food prices still lag behind the inflation reduction seen during Biden's tenure.

Despite the White House pointing to recent data showing stable U.S. consumer prices in July, Republican voters like Carney have become disillusioned with rising food costs, particularly due to the Iran war. Recent polling suggests Republicans are less enthusiastic about voting in the midterms, with grocery prices and gas prices cited as significant factors. This ambivalence presents a challenge for Republicans, highlighting the psychological impact of grocery shopping as a reminder of the tightening household finances.
