Trump instructs Pentagon to reduce military exercises with South Korea

President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to significantly decrease joint military exercises with South Korea, as reported on his social media platform Truth Social. The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, involving around 18,000 South Korean troops, were set to run from August 17 to 27. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the agreement to participate in these drills, citing their high cost and the inappropriate and hostile signals they send to South Korea, which he described as unthreatening and respectful during his presidency.

He also highlighted South Korea's refusal to engage in actions against Iran, stating he had previously asked the South Korean president about joining the US in Iran's denuclearization, to which they had responded negatively. The White House and Pentagon have yet to respond to inquiries regarding Trump's request to scale back the military drills.

North Korea has consistently denounced the US-South Korea exercises as preparations for invasion; recently, North Korea launched a ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan, following a similar launch on August 6. US military officials have noted that North Korean soldiers, who have fought alongside Russia in Ukraine, have gained experience from the conflict, including the use of unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and cyber operations.

Ukraine reported that North Korean-made missiles were employed in a Russian ballistic missile attack on a steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, resulting in seven deaths and a production halt. Russia's Zircon hypersonic missiles were also utilized in the attack.
