Toast, boners, and margarine haters all come together on Wikipedia

In the vast expanse of Wikipedia's articles, some peculiar entries stand out. "Quick Hits" features a variety of intriguing subjects, often discovered through the popular Instagram account, Depths Of Wikipedia. One such oddity is Gordon Roseleip, a Platteville businessman who ran as a Republican politician. Roseleip attempted to ban margarine in an effort to support Wisconsin's dairy farmers.

Although his bill failed after a blind taste test, where he chose artificial margarine, it was revealed posthumously that his family regularly consumed margarine, including a brand from Iowa.

Another peculiar article is "The Pocket Book Of Boners," which contains 22 illustrations of boners, drawn by Dr. Seuss. The term "boners" in this context refers to blunders or screw-ups. The book, published under the pseudonym Alexander Abingdon, features humorous schoolboy mistakes, such as "A man who marries twice commits bigotry." Seuss himself was reluctant to share these boners, publishing the book anonymously.

"Girl Late To School With Toast In Her Mouth," also known as Shokupan Dash or Toast Musume, is a trope in Japanese shōjo manga. The story follows a girl who is late for school, rushes out the door with a piece of toast in her mouth, and eventually falls in love with a boy she bumps into. This trope has been featured in manga as early as 1962, and even inspired a "Toast Girl" mobile game and a college event.

"Fall Of Communism As Seen In Gay Pornography" is a documentary about the decline of Eastern European communism, observed through the lens of gay pornography. Filmmaker William E. Jones created the documentary after the 1998 collapse of the Iron Curtain, as the budget for traveling to Eastern Europe was insufficient. Jones found cheap, exploitative porn in post-Soviet Eastern Europe, which he believed served both as actual pornography and a commentary on the region's economic struggles.

The documentary argues that these films provided both sexual titillation and a representation of the region's hardships.

Lastly, "Fatso The Fat-Arsed Wombat" is an unofficial mascot from the 2000 Olympics. Created by Sydney cartoonist Paul Newell for a sports comedy TV show, Fatso was intended to parody Sydney's official mascots. Despite being a critique of commercialization, Fatso became so popular that he appeared with Olympic gold medalists and was commemorated by a postage stamp.

Only two official Fatso plush toys were made, one for the TV show and another for the Olympic village. One plush toy was auctioned for charity, raising over $80,000 Australian dollars. A statue of the wombat also stands outside Sydney Olympic Stadium.
