Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader Mustapha Sakmud urged the country's political parties to abandon their identity-based and ethnic/nationalistic narratives in favor of performance-based competition and delivering a better life for the people. In a Facebook post, Mustapha emphasized that Sabah's diversity in ethnicity, religion, and culture is a strength.

He argued that today's people's issues are not about which tribe or religion one belongs to, but rather who can solve problems and meet their needs. Mustapha stated that the people of Sabah are increasingly mature and should not be manipulated into narrow ethnic and identity-based politics by certain factions. For Sabah, he stressed, this principle is crucial in addressing issues such as fuel subsidies, education, healthcare, water, electricity, highways, internet, and rural development, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach.
