Thousands evacuate after Indonesia quake kills 53, aftershocks hamper rescue efforts

On August 16, a magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara province in Indonesia, resulting in the evacuation of around 5,000 people and at least 53 fatalities. The disaster also caused numerous injuries, with many victims suffering broken bones. Over 130 people were injured, and numerous landslides were reported. Authorities reported that more than 3,300 people in the eastern Sikka region self-evacuated or took shelter in a sports arena.

The earthquake, which occurred in an area prone to seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, triggered over a thousand aftershocks. Many residents remained stranded outside collapsed homes, while others sought refuge in makeshift tents and hospitals. In Maumere, a now-closed port littered with debris from collapsed buildings, locals expressed fear of subsequent aftershocks.

Margaretha Movaldes Da Maga Bapa, head of the region's disaster mitigation agency, recalled the trauma of the 1992 earthquake, emphasizing that such quakes had become a regular occurrence in the region. Rescue efforts focused on clearing rubble to locate individuals who might still be trapped under the debris. Despite over 3,500 military and police officers being deployed to the region, progress was hampered by landslides and aftershocks. Power supply was largely restored, but authorities worked on repairing distribution lines.

The government declared an emergency in East Nusa Tenggara, mobilizing resources and funding for the relief efforts. Geology expert Dwikorita Karnawati warned of the region's vulnerability to future earthquakes due to the presence of the Flores back-arc thrust fault. The area had experienced a magnitude-7.5 earthquake in 1992, which caused extensive destruction.
