This holiday hotspot soon won't have an emergency department

Batemans Bay's hospital and emergency department will cease operations next year when the new Eurobodalla Regional Hospital opens in Moruya. Despite the region's popularity as a holiday destination and its growing population, many locals are worried about the increased travel time to reach the new facility. Christine Hayes, who suffered a stroke at her Surfside home, had her life saved by the Batemans Bay emergency department, which will now close.

The new hospital, a level four facility, will provide better care and a wider range of services. However, community members question if the 30-minute travel time to Moruya is reasonable, especially during peak holiday periods when traffic congestion is a concern. Some argue that immediate treatment by emergency-trained doctors is crucial, while others believe ambulances can navigate traffic obstructions.

The NSW government contends that the new hospital's location was chosen for its central placement within the shire, and is working with NSW Ambulance to ensure timely access to emergency medicine. However, Dr. Andrew Gibson worries that the additional travel time and congestion could have serious implications for those living north of the Batemans Bay bridge.
