The essence of architectural work - Part 5

In the previous article, we concluded our exploration of architectural work by examining its underlying purposes, primarily the cognitive and humane aspects. We briefly touched upon the limitations of AI agents in satisfying these traits, as they cannot consistently solve recurring problems. This post will delve into the "What" aspect of architectural work, focusing on the various activities that constitute this field.

Before diving into these activities, it is essential to revisit the two "laws of architectural work." These are not strict laws but rather insights gained through experience. The first law states that every decision in architectural work comes with a price. There are no free lunches in this realm – every decision carries both advantages and disadvantages, and there are no absolute right or wrong choices.

The second law emphasizes that the evaluation of decisions is context-dependent. The consequences of a particular decision vary based on the circumstances in which they are made.

With these foundational principles in mind, let us now turn our attention to the activities that define architectural work. To organize these activities, I have developed a simple framework based on the C4 model. The framework consists of four key components: Explore, Execute, Enhance, and Evolve.

Explore represents the design phase of architectural work. This stage involves conceptualizing various solution options, integrating frameworks, tools, and technologies to create a robust architecture. It's crucial to note that while some people may argue that the plural form "solutions" should be used, I prefer to maintain consistency by using the singular form "solution."

The design of an architecture is an indispensable activity, as every solution inherently possesses an architecture. Whether one chooses to explicitly or implicitly design the architecture is a matter of personal preference, but the explicit approach is strongly recommended.

While the Explore phase focuses on designing the solution, the Execute phase centers around facilitating decision-making among stakeholders involved in the project. Architects often find themselves in the role of mediators, guiding stakeholders through the decision-making process while ensuring their context is considered. This phase emphasizes collaboration, communication, and providing support to stakeholders, as the ultimate decisions are typically made by other team members, such as developers.

The Enhance and Evolve phases represent the iterative nature of architectural work. As systems evolve over time, architectures must adapt to meet changing requirements and address emerging challenges. Enhance involves refining and optimizing the architecture, while Evolve focuses on continuously adapting the architecture to accommodate new developments and maintain its relevance.
