Suspected Russian drone shot down in Romanian airspace

Russian strikes on Ukraine have claimed at least one life and left seven others wounded, while a Spanish jet has successfully shot down a drone that violated Romanian airspace, according to various reports.

A woman tragically lost her life in a missile and drone attack on Kryvyi Rih, the birthplace of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, with regional governor confirming the casualties. Additionally, Kyiv reportedly endured a ballistic missile attack late on Saturday, August 15, resulting in a single injury and the ignition of fires at non-residential areas in Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts.

Separately, Romania's Defense Ministry reported on August 16 that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet pilot, serving on a NATO air policing mission in Romania, took down an unauthorized drone that had breached the nation's airspace. This marks the fourth such incident this year for Romania. The exact origin of the drone remains undisclosed by the Ministry.

In July, a Romanian jet had also shot down a suspected Russian drone, while in May, a stray drone collided with a building in Galati, injuring two individuals. Romania, with its 634km (394-mile) border with Ukraine, has frequently witnessed Russian drones crossing its airspace amidst the escalating bombing campaign against Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure by Moscow.

Throughout the ongoing conflict, Russian long-range strikes have become increasingly frequent. These missile and drone assaults have been targeting areas distant from the frontlines, causing widespread damage across Ukraine. Recently, the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission reported a record high of civilian casualties in July, with at least 437 people killed and 2,610 injured.

In Russia, authorities on Sunday confirmed a significant drone incursion launched by Ukrainian forces. In response, officials claimed they had successfully shot down over 100 drones heading towards Moscow overnight. Emergency services rushed to the affected locations, where debris had fallen. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that three people sustained injuries during these incidents.
