The local news reported that an active shooter was on the loose and circulated videos showing a substantial police presence at the scene. The Lubbock Police Department had yet to comment on the matter. Local news pages relayed messages warning people to stay alert, suggesting an active shooter situation. One update claimed that two men committed an armed robbery at Dillards within the mall.

Witnesses on the scene expressed confusion and concern, describing the overwhelming police presence as they attempted to leave the mall.
