Santa Shoebox Project opens up team pledges for 2026

The Santa Shoebox Project (SSP), a beloved South African charity, is gearing up for its 20th anniversary in 2026 by inviting individuals and groups to participate in the "Team Pledge" initiative. This year, the project officially opens its doors to offices, book clubs, school communities, and even Saturday braai circles, encouraging them to form teams and commit to donating a batch of 20 or more shoeboxes filled with essential items and toys for underprivileged children. The campaign theme #WhatAPledgeStarts emphasizes the joy and impact of giving.

Each Santa Shoebox contains eight specific items, including soap, wash cloth, toothpaste, toothbrush, new clothes, educational supplies, a toy, and sweets, all tailored to the recipient's age, gender, and needs. The project's CEO, Deb Zelezniak, highlights that the pledge is a promise made to a specific child, ensuring they receive a personalized and special gift.

"When a team chooses their children by name, age, and gender, they aren't just shopping for supplies. They are creating an experience where a child in their community they've never met feels important," Zelezniak explains.

The process of forming a team is simple: choose a leader, register on the Santa Shoebox website, and divide the names among team members to distribute the shopping tasks. This collective effort turns months of planning into the cherished moment when children eagerly receive their gifts and proudly display them for everyone to see.
