Rana Sanaullah Clarifies Govt Position on New Provinces

Rana Sanaullah, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political and Public Affairs, has clarified the government’s stance on the creation of new provinces in Pakistan. Speaking to Geo News, Sanaullah stated that there have been no conversations with the establishment or within the federal cabinet regarding this matter. He emphasized that the establishment had not broached the subject of new provinces with the government, nor had the federal cabinet discussed the proposal.

Sanaullah further noted that the idea of creating new provinces has so far failed to gain public approval. This comes as political debate and speculation regarding administrative reforms and the potential formation of additional provinces in Pakistan have intensified. The topic of new provinces has been raised periodically over the years, most notably for a South Punjab province and in various instances for separate administrative units in Hazara and Karachi.

However, no constitutional amendment has been enacted, as such a step necessitates a broad political consensus and a two-thirds majority in parliament. The government has not formally addressed the issue at the cabinet level and has not engaged in discussions with the establishment on this matter.
