QNL strengthens Arab library presence at IFLA WLIC 2026 in Republic of Korea

Doha, Qatar - Qatar National Library (QNL) demonstrated its leadership in the global library and information sector during the 90th IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) 2026 held in Busan, Republic of Korea. A delegation of high-level experts from QNL, including Dr. Arif Shaon, Head of Digital Curation, Preservation, and Access, and Tan Huism, Executive Director and Chair of the IFLA National Libraries Section, actively participated in the event.

Dr. Shaon engaged in sessions focused on digital preservation and safeguarding of documentary heritage, while Huism spearheaded panel discussions that underscored the evolution of information landscapes, digital transformation, and regional cooperation. In line with QNL's mission to bolster Arab representation, the library organized the Arabic Caucus under the theme "Voices from the Region: Shared Priorities and Prospects for Future Cooperation" on August 9, 2026.

The Caucus featured a variety of sessions, starting with an opening presentation by QNL, followed by a Middle East and North Africa Regional Committee address, a survey of the current library landscape in the region, and an open forum for future collaboration discussions. The Caucus also marked the selection of 52 Middle East and North Africa members to IFLA roles and committees for the 2025-2027 term, highlighting a diverse and professional Arab presence that will influence the future of library and information science on a global scale.

QNL's commitment to nurturing young leaders in the library field is evident through the QIMAM Award, the first of its kind in the Arab world, further underscoring the library's dedication to advancing the profession across the region.
