Qatar denies detaining Iranian pilots, says it found remains of one

Qatar has dismissed allegations that it is holding Iranian pilots, describing the claims as "misleading" and stating that their emergence is puzzling given ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions. The controversy stems from the initial days of the Iran war on March 2, when Qatar's air force reportedly shot down two Iranian Su-24 bombers, marking the first such interception in the Gulf during the conflict.

Majed Al Ansari, an adviser to Qatar's prime minister and foreign ministry spokesman, stated that Qatar established communication with the pilots after they violated Qatari airspace and that the decision to take defensive measures was made after they failed to respond to attempts at communication, in line with international law and the rules of engagement.

Qatar's search-and-rescue teams later conducted an operation to locate the pilots' remains, Al Ansari added. Iran accused Qatar of detaining the pilots, alleging that three surviving pilots were captured by Qatari forces and are held in detention. Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh, commander of Iran's Committee for the Search for Missing Persons of the Armed Forces General Staff, wrote to the International Committee of the Red Cross alleging that Qatar denied the pilots the right to communicate with their families or Iranian officials, in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

He called for a visit to assess the pilots' health and physical condition and to facilitate their release, accusing Qatar of disregarding the pilots' rights as prisoners of war. Qatar maintains that diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions are ongoing, and Iran has faced international criticism for arbitrary detention, including of foreign nationals, which critics say Tehran employs as leverage in negotiations with other governments.
