Poland’s Sikorski wants Ukrainian combat veterans in new European force

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has advocated for the establishment of a permanent European Union military force composed of Ukrainian combat veterans, named the "European Legion." This proposal was made during an interview with Ekathimerini, as Sikorski emphasized the need for greater military integration within the EU and stronger defense capabilities.

"I am strongly in favor of creating a European Legion - a dedicated, permanent force that could recruit seasoned professionals from the wider European family, including battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans after the war," Sikorski stated. Sikorski stressed that Europe must shoulder more responsibility for its own security and should not depend solely on American assistance during future crises.

However, he made clear that this force should not replace NATO or duplicate its functions, but rather serve as a way to strengthen the European pillar within NATO. Sikorski acknowledged that while the United States remains the "indispensable anchor" of collective defense, its role is evolving, and Europe must "do the heavy lifting on the ground."

Poland celebrated its largest military parade on August 15 to mark Armed Forces Day, featuring land, naval, and air capabilities, with allies including the United States, Canada, Australia, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Romania, and France participating. However, Ukrainian representatives were not invited to the parade.
