Malaysia must preserve its reputation as a trusted trade and shipping hub by ensuring the country’s ports are not abused for dubious trade activities, according to maritime industry observer Jeyenderan Ramasamy. The government should conduct a comprehensive investigation into any company accused of using Malaysian ports for such purposes, including gathering evidence, identifying cargo involved, and taking legal action where necessary.

Ramasamy emphasized that Malaysia should not dismiss concerns raised by international trade partners lightly, as any doubt regarding a company's original documents or cargo controls could harm domestic businesses operating legitimately.

Transshipment is not a mistake; Malaysia is a major trading nation, and cargo should be allowed through our ports. However, legitimate transshipment must be clearly distinguished from attempts to conceal the true origin of goods. Ramasamy warned that concerns exist about goods being brought in from high-tariff countries, such as the United States, possibly smuggled or re-labeled, or merely passing through minimal processing in Malaysia before being exported as originating from this country.

"Changing labels or wrapping does not automatically make something Malaysian," he stressed, insisting authorities must determine whether genuine production or substantive changes occur within the country.

Ramasamy also urged the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) to strengthen risk-based screening through data analysis and expand information sharing with port authorities, shipping companies, and enforcement agencies to create a more comprehensive audit trail for cargo. At the same time, he reminded legitimate importers, exporters, packers, forwarders, customs agents, and warehouse managers not to be penalized. If any company is found abusing our ports or free trade zones, identify them and take action.
