Pallister takes down Ledecky in Pan Pacs 800m freestyle

Australian swimmer Lani Pallister secured a victory over US superstar Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle event at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California on Saturday. This marked Ledecky's first defeat in an international championship in the 800m distance, according to wire-to-wire reporting. Pallister clocked 8 minutes and 6.10 seconds, while Ledecky finished second in 8 minutes and 7.26 seconds.

The race saw Ledecky struggle to make a late comeback, securing only a narrow win over Pallister. Ledecky's dominance in the event is well-established, having won 13 international gold medals, including four Olympic medals and seven world titles. The only other time Ledecky lost in this event was during a sectional meet in Florida in February 2024, where Canadian Summer McIntosh defeated her.

Ledecky managed to clinch a razor-thin victory over Pallister at the World Championships in Singapore the previous year. The Australian swimmer expressed her admiration for Ledecky, acknowledging her dominance and importance to women's distance swimming. Pallister, who had previously defeated Ledecky in the 400m freestyle, emphasized the crucial role Ledecky plays in the evolution of women's swimming.
