Osun Guber: Federal might, Abuja influence cannot override public goodwill – Showunmi

Otunba Segun Showunmi, a leading figure in the Peoples Democratic Party and founder of the Alternative movement, has declared that the re-election of Osun's Governor Ademola Adeleke proves that federal influence and political machinations in Abuja are no longer enough to override the public's support earned through performance at the grassroots level.

In a statement released on Sunday, Showunmi emphasized that voters are now placing greater emphasis on local results over national political power. He argued that the electoral process is becoming more independent, as citizens are exercising their judgment and voting according to their own convictions. Showunmi pointed out that the Yoruba people still lean towards a republican mindset, but their democratic culture is becoming more mature.

The Osun governorship election sent a clear message to political actors across the country: excessive use of power and bullying will not be tolerated. Voters are increasingly intolerant of any situation that resembles unfair pressure. Showunmi stressed that Osun has reaffirmed the importance of the governor's performance, regardless of what happens in Abuja.

A popular governor enjoys a significant advantage due to local goodwill generated through effective service delivery, accessibility, and positive public perception. Voters are becoming bolder in their choices, and the era when political endorsements alone could secure electoral victory is slowly fading. Showunmi congratulated Governor Adeleke, crediting the victory to the people's reward for service delivery rather than political pressure from the center.

He cautioned political parties against neglecting internal stakeholders, stating that structure without loyalty is useless on election day. Demonstrating the unacceptable nature of violence and loss of lives during the election, Showunmi called for accountability among those responsible for election-related violence.
