Oliveira dedicates Portugal stage win to Tarling family

Rui Oliveira clinched the final stage of the Volta a Portugal in his hometown of Porto, dedicating the victory to Fin Tarling's family. Tarling, a 19-year-old British rider, lost his life after a crash during stage eight. The concluding two stages proceeded with the family's approval, though Tarling's team NSN Development withdrew from the event. Race leader Alexis Guerin did not face any challenges on the final day, thus securing the overall title. Oliveira secured the stage win through a hard-fought sprint finish.

Oliveira began by expressing his deepest sympathies to Tarling's family, friends, and team. He conveyed how difficult the past couple of days had been, trying to imagine their pain. Oliveira had previously mentioned his intention to win for everyone supporting him, emphasizing his thoughts were primarily on Tarling's family and team-mates. This win was dedicated to them.

Many participants wore black armbands in tribute to Tarling. Oliveira, a 29-year-old born and raised in Porto, secured his first professional road victory in his home city. He carried a Porto football shirt draped across his shoulders, feeling a strong sense of motivation as he passed his home four times. The stage win was a heartfelt gesture to Tarling's family, who were deeply in his heart and those of his own family who supported him throughout these trying times.
