NSW government offers fast-track scheme for data centres who comply with new guidelines

The NSW government has launched a new framework to fast-track data centre applications, offering a 75-day assessment window for builders who adhere to strict environmental and efficiency standards. Treasurer Daniel Mookhey stated that data centre builders would be responsible for footing the bill for new clean energy, sparing Australian taxpayers from the financial burden.

Under the new guidelines, builders must meet environmental standards, impose no net cost to consumers, fund additional supply of water and energy, enhance local community infrastructure, invest in future industries, and commit to skills training and job support. The framework aims to replace old energy sources, such as coal-fired power, with clean, green, renewable power to avoid increased household costs.

While builders that do not comply could have their proposals rejected, the government has not set penalties for such non-compliance. The move has faced opposition from community groups concerned about the impact of data centres on local infrastructure, water supply, and power prices.
